An investment banker for more than 25 years with numerous landmark transactions to his credit, Sheldon Trainor has focused his career on Asia-Pacific markets. He has an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of the region and of the business development needs of its companies and individual countries.

Sheldon’s broad experience advising on financing and strategic matters has helped him develop an extensive network and strong relationships with major public and private sector companies, public organizations and government bodies across Asia. He is widely regarded as an expert in helping companies plan and finance their future growth and execute their strategic plans.

Sheldon was Managing Director and Head of the General Industries Group at Morgan Stanley Asia from 2000 to 2004He then moved to Merrill Lynch Asia as Head of Investment Banking, where he managed a team of more than 250 across ten countries, including China and India. Promoted to Vice Chair of Merrill Lynch Asia, Sheldon oversaw client coverage and principal investments for the bank. During this period Merrill Lynch was named Best Investment Bank in Asia (by asset, 2007) and awarded Best General Industries Bank of the Year by Finance Asia in 2005 and 2006.

Sheldon is the Founder and a Director of PacBridge Partners. Under his guidance, since 2009 PacBridge has completed more than USD $4B in transactions and made numerous investments in companies both in Asia and around the world across a wide range of sectors including agriculture, mining, recycling, pharmaceuticals, tourism and gaming.

A dual Canadian and Australian citizen, Sheldon is currently Executive Director of Macau Legend Development Limited. He is active with his alma mater, the University of British Columbia, where he sits on the Senate and is a member of the China Advisory Council for the Sauder School of Business.

Stephen received his undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia and law degree from the University of New Brunswick. He is always on the go, whether it be swimming, yoga, spin class or sailing.


Lawyer, business advisor, political advisor and entrepreneur, Stephen Kukucha has a proven track record helping companies enter and/or succeed in the Canadian market, particularly in British Columbia. His dynamic personality and tireless work ethic make him a sought-after advisor.

Stephen has a depth and breadth of experience in diverse areas in both the public and private sectors. He practiced at one of Canada’s top law firms, moved successfully into politics, then headed the global external affairs group for Ballard Power Systems, a world-leading energy technology firm, where he was responsible for regulatory affairs, government and industry partnerships, plus business development efforts in Asia, particularly in China. 

Ever the entrepreneur, Stephen has founded a number of companies, including, in 2007, Atla Energy, where he helped raise capital, manage legal and corporate development, establish Aboriginal and industry partnerships, engage stakeholders and provide project management. In 2010, he sold Atla to Syntaris Power.

Stephen puts his wide-ranging experience, knowledge, relationships and capabilities to good use, providing high-level strategic advice to help companies achieve their specific objectives, be they successfully introducing their products or business to Canadian or Asian markets, or driving revenues to new heights. He holds a keen understanding of Canadian strategic, regulatory and business perspectives. 

Stephen has the relentless drive and talent to execute plans effectively and strategically—skills he used to full effect when serving in various provincial and federal election victories. He has also helped lead several Canadian and US industry associations and partnerships, including Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance (Chair), National Hydrogen Association (Director), US Fuel Cell Council (Director), World Fuel Cell Council (Director), California Fuel Cell Partnership (Steering Team) and Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Association (Chair).

Howard Balloch, former Canadian Ambassador to China, has built an impressive and respected network of connections and associations across Canada and Asia throughout his distinguished career as a senior public servant and successful investment executive.

In addition to China, he is a former Canadian Ambassador to Mongolia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Prior to that, he served the federal government as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for National Unity through the Quebec referendum on sovereignty in late 1995, Assistant Deputy Minister for Asia from 1991 to 1994 and Head of Policy Planning from 1989 to 1991. Earlier in his diplomatic career he served in both Prague and Jakarta.

In 2002 Ambassador Balloch founded The Balloch Group, a Beijing-based investment advisory and merchant-banking firm. Ranked as the leading boutique investment bank in China 2008 through 2010, TBG specialized in Canada-China mergers and acquisitions and public market transactions of both state-owned and private Chinese firms.

In 2011, Canaccord Financial purchased TBG and named Ambassador Balloch Chair of its Asian operations, a role he held until 2013 when he stepped aside to focus on his Hong Kong-based private equity business.

An active board member, Ambassador Balloch is past president (2001-2006) and Vice Chairman (2006-2015) of the Canadian China Business Council. He is currently a Director of Methanex Corporation, Maple Leaf Educational Systems and Sinopec Canada. Married with four grown children and the author of the memoir, Semi-Nomadic Anecdotes, Ambassador Balloch holds a BA and MA from McGill University, and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Toronto and Sciences Po in Paris.


Giovanni Wong is a Principal at PacBridge Partners with a decade of banking experience in Canada and China. Prior to joining PacBridge, he was an investment banker with Merrill Lynch in both Hong Kong and Toronto, where he focused on natural resource companies.

Transactions Giovanni has advised on include Berau Coal’s USD $1.3B sale to ReCapital, Bayan Resources USD $526M IPO on the Indonesian Stock Exchange and various equity and mergers and acquisitions in Asia and North America.

Giovanni graduated with an Honours Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University in London, Ontario.


A Principal at PacBridge Partners, James Lumsdaine is an investment banker with deep experience in the Asian and Australian markets. At Merrill Lynch Hong Kong he focused on natural resources and chemicals companies. Prior to that, he was a member of the Financial Sponsors and Leverage Finance team at Goldman Sachs Australia

James has advised companies on numerous multi-million dollar transactions, including Blackstone on its USD $600M investment into ChemChina, ChemChina and Blackstone on their joint USD $2.8B bid for Nufarm, and UC Rusal on its USD $2.2B Hong Kong IPO.

James holds a Bachelor of Commerce and LL.B with honours from the University of Sydney.
